What tools make Site Search more effective?

IDC Bulletin #27513 - Feb 2002
Chris Sherman, Susan Feldman

Executive Summary
IDC explains the problems of site search as being far from trivial. It takes time and resources to optimize the search engine, to target and map content to best accomodate site visitors - and thereby increase traffic and sales on the site. However, IDC points out how Mondosoft has streamlined the process of installing and operating a customizable site search function. Mondosoft do this by offering easy ranking control, easy categorization, providing a comprehensive search reporting system, compatibility to content management systems and easy administrative tools. Or as IDC puts it:

"While all these [MondoSearch] features are attractive, three primary features give MondoSearch a serious competitive edge. These "ABCs" - [are] administrative tools, BehaviorTracking, and content management."

About BehaviorTracking, IDC says that:
"[BehaviorTracking] information can be invaluable for optimizing the search function for users; it's almost like having ongoing focus group data. Popular pages can be made more visible. New pages can be added for failed searches. Metadata, including synonyms for popular search terms, can be added to relevant pages where those terms aren't found in the text itself. "

"On a broader level, BehaviorTracking information can be used for purposes beyond tweaking the user interface. Business strategists can see which products or services generate interest. [...] The uses of BehaviorTracking data are virtually endless."
